"One group to rule them all" - Polycyano organic compounds are record holding superacids

Superacid is any acid stronger than 100% sulphuric acid. There is an ongoing interest in chemistry for compounds exhibiting extreme acidity, since neutral superacids are the most important catalysts in chemical transformations. In a majority of acid-catalyzed reactions stronger acids provide better catalyst. Modern studies on superacids have significant importance in a variety of fields of research, including organic synthesis, ionic liquids, electrochemical technologies involving fuel cells and batteries, non-coordinating anions and reagents for isolation of chemically very important, highly reactive and long-sought cations like HC60+, C6H7+, Me3C+, Bu3Sn+ and Xe2+. Taking everything into account, a design of novel neutral organic superacids is vital from practical and scientific points of view.
