Variaton of somatic cell count (SCC) of dairy cattle in conditions of Eastern Croatia

With the aim of analysis the variability of somatic cell count (SCC) of dairy cattle in conditions of Eastern region in Croatia, test- day records extracted from HPA database were used. SCC values were natural log-transformed (LSCC). For estimation of LSCC variability due to measuring season effect with particular regard to parity and breed fixed – effect model that take into account the effects of lactation stage, calving and measuring season was used. Based on result of current research it could be concluded that values of LSCC increase in summer and autumn season in both Simmental and Holstein breeds regardless the parity class. Regarding the measuring months, in all cows, regardless the breed and parity, the highest value of LSCC, was measured in November. In relation to parity, the highest values of LSCC were obtained in Holstein and Simmental cows in third and higher lactations. Relating to season, Simmental cows had highest values of LSCC during autumn and winter season. Holsteins had highest measured values of LSCC in summer (heifers) and autumn (second, third and higher lactations) season. Finally, it could be concluded that microclimatic conditions in the stable (temperature and relative humidity) significantly influence the somatic cell count (SCC) of healthy dairy cattle, therefore SCC could be used as a tool for detrimental microclimatic conditions detection.
