Building early cancer detection program inside family medicine by a support of the informational networked system

Purpose: to represent key steps in building early cancer detection program integrated in a practice of family physicians, as a part of research project. Four main cancer sites were encompassed (colorectal, breast, cervical and prostate cancer). During 2007-2010, selection of the target populations was done from the large sample of 27.000 subjects. Computer program for automatic downloading patients from the CEZIH system and for following up the research protocol was installed on computers of selected family physicians and their computers were networked via the central server unit to enable collecting data automatically. For colorectal cancer: a total number of 1859 FOBTs were delivered to patients until April 2010. Responding rate was 54%. There were 54 subjects with positive tests. For breast cancer: by intervention of family physicians, the cover rate of mammography increased from 63, 5% (achieved ny National pogram)to 82, 1%. For cervical and prostate cancer: lists of patients of target groups were downloaded and the program is just starting. CONCLUSIONS: Early cancer detection program, when properly prepared and supported by a computer program, can be entirely performed by family physicians, without the need to be supervised, or conduvted by pubic health services.
