Radiation protection in Croatia
The system of the radiation protection used in Croatia is mainly based on recommendations of International Atomic Energy Agency ( IAEA). Act on Ionising Radiation Protection and on Security of Ionising Radiation Sources (2006) implements Basic Safety Standards (BSS) on the protection of workers and the general public against the dangers of ionising radiation. There are three National Regulatory Authorities: State Office for Radiation Protection (SORP) , State Office for Nuclear Safety (SONS) and Ministry of Health and social welfare. SORP regulates all issues regarding ionizing radiations and manages national registries of institutions (users), sources, workers and doses. Technical tasks of protection against ionising radiation, especially the measurement of personal doses as well as inspection of ionising radiation sources performs approved technical services holding approval in the form of a decision issued by SORP. Ruđer Bošković Institute (RBI) is one of the three approved technical services, performing workplace monitoring, personal dosimetry , environment radioaktivity monitoring, removal of radioactive sources and storaging radioaktive material. Nowadays RBI provide personnel monitoring service for 1700 people using thermoluminescent dosimeters ( Harshow). This number as well as number of radioactive facilities is constantly growing.
