From pemphix to desmogleins
Introduction: Blistering diseases are heterogenous group of diseases, inherited and acquired, known for their symptom - pemphix of blister - for a long time, but well defined only in the second part of 20th century. Methods: First to use name pemphigus was Hyppokrates, but first to apply it for blistering disease was Francois Boissier in 1731. Results: In the past most of blistering diseases were considered as one disease, referred as pemphigus or pompholyx. Untill 1953, when Walter Lever published work on differentiation of pemphigus from bullous pemphigoid, diagnosis of blistering diseases was made based on clinical picture and some mechanical symptoms, as Nikolskiy, Asboe-Hansen and Sheklakov signs. New step in the history of blistering diseases was made by Beutner and Jordon with their discovery of presence of circulating autoantibodies against surface of keratinocytes in patients with pemphigus vulgaris. Conclusions: In most recent era, molecular biologic discoveries brought us new knowledges and diagnostic methods, result of which are updated classification of inherited as well as autoimmune blistering diseases.
