History of syphilis in Croatia
Introduction: Syphilis remains a challenge and interest of nowadays dermatovenerologists as well other specialists. There are still controversies about the origin of syphilis. The authors describe the appearing of syphilis in the coastal part and islands of Croatia at the beginning of the 16-th century. The disease was first observed in towns Zadar (1500), Trogir (1501) and in Dubrovnik (1502). Among the first physicians who treated patients in Dubrovnik were Marianus Santus and Amatus Lusitanus. The latter was the first that made prosthesis for the defect of the palatine vault to cure tertiary syphilis lesions. At the end of the 18-th century, and during the 19-th century in Dalmatia appeared the endemic syphilis known as morbus de Scherlievo and morbus Brenensis. Because the great number of cases a few hospitals were opened in the Croatian towns. Methods: Literature data. Results: All historical data from journals and recent literature on syphilis in Croatia. Conclusions: Among the physicians who were engaged in the fight against the disease in that time we must mention Giovanni Battista Cambieri, Božo Peričić and Nikola Selak. They all treated the affected patients and wrote on syphilis in our or foreign journals. Our presentation will illustrate the rich history of syphilis in Croatia.
