Students’ experience in teaching: “Basics of sound recording and processing”

The course “Basics of sound recording and processing” was initiated by two students who wanted to familiarize themselves, as well as other students attending the course, with some of the practical aspects of sound engineering. Some of the more important topics included in the course are: live and studio recording principles, comparison of audio recording equipment and principles of sound processing. Most of the classes are based on individual work and give the students a chance to experiment with hardware and software. The course is held during the summer semester at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing in Zagreb, and is divided into fifteen lessons. Each lesson includes a brief theoretical introduction and is followed by a practical or demonstrational exercise. A successfully completed practical test at the end of the semester (recording and processing of new material or processing and mixing of a prerecorded project) and adequate class attendance are required for a passing grade. Scheduling problems, as well as inconsistent background knowledge due to diversity of attending students are predicted and expected, and are to be resolved by limiting the number of participants and forming small groups for practical exercises. Some of the individual processing work is expected to be done at home. The main goal is to provide a small group of students with basic experience in sound recording and processing through successful organization and implementation of the course, and to use their feedback to improve the course in the future.
