Basics Of Sound Recording And Processing: Stereo Recording Techniques

The course “Basics of sound recording and processing” was initiated by two students of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing of the University of Zagreb who wanted to familiarize themselves, as well as other students attending the course, with some of the practical aspects of sound engineering. The course itself is organized so that most of the topics included are covered from both a theoretical and a practical standpoint. Most of the classes are based on individual work and give the students a chance to experiment with hardware and software. The main goal is to provide a small group of students with basic experience in sound recording and processing through successful organization and implementation of the course, and to use their feedback to improve the course in the future. Course organization, preparation of individual lessons, as well as their implementation is briefly described in the paper. Through collaboration with students of The Music Academy of the University of Zagreb, the students attending the course had the opportunity to participate in a live, on-site, stereo recording of a brass orchestra during a rehearsal and a concert. The orchestra was recorded using three different stereo recording techniques. Subjective listening test were held to compare sound quality produced by the recordings made at the rehearsal and the concert. Recording process description and subjective listening test results are both included.
