A Finite Element Model of a Carbon Nanotube for Thermally Variable Environments

Recently, experimental research carried out on carbon nanotubes proved that these molecular structures shrink with temperature increase. However, longitudinal and radial contractions are different. In structural mechanics approach nanotubes are modelled with beam finite elements. Since beam finite elements cannot be used to model anisotropic thermal shrinkage, some alternative procedure must be found out. Therefore, a new model is proposed that enables such simulations. Model is based on the truss elements that are introduced in each repetitive section of nanotube. Truss elements have different coefficients of thermal expansion than beam finite elements, what can be tuned to real nanotubes behaviour. Model is tested on one example and compared to the results obtained by other authors.
