Competency development - using General Level Framework in community pharmacy

Introduction: ATLANTIC FARMACIA is the largest pharmacy chain in Croatia, delivering pharmaceutical care to 4, 5 million patients per year. Pharmacists are challenged and encouraged by the Company to provide additional services and to maintain excellence in pharmaceutical care as the core postulate due to vision of the Company. Aims: It has been demonstrated in previous studies that pharmacist competency development is precisely determined, accelerated and sustained by the General Level Framework (GLF), and thus this tool was used to assess performance as to evaluate current competencies in community pharmacies in Croatia. This work has used General Level Framework (GLF) as educational intervention in order to develop community pharmacist’s competencies and improve pharmaceutical care in Croatia. Methods: The researchers evaluated 100 pharmacists working in 55 ATLANTIC FARMACIA community pharmacies after 12 -month period of using GLF as educational tool. This pharmacy chain in its structure have sufficient diversity needed for this study. The data was analyzed using SPSS. Results: Using GLF in competency development plan, we found out that after 12 month period all named competencies can be significantly developed. The pharmacists demonstrated the best performance development in following competencies: Patient consultation, Monitoring drug therapy, Medicine information and patient education, Evaluation of outcomes. New standard operating procedures were implemented (taking medication history, providing written information, use of guidelines) as well as obligatory documenting contribution in pharmacist’s portfolio.
