Investigation of the Antimycotic Activities of Solidago virgaurea and Solidago gigantea Exstracts

Solidago species (Asteraceae) have been used for centuries in folk medicine for the treatment of chronic nephritis, urolithiasis, cystitis, rheumatism, ulceration and as an atiflogistic drug. Solidago virgaurea and S. gigantea contain polysaccharides, flavonoid glycosides, triterpenoid saponins, tannins, phenolglycosides and volatile oils. The plant ethanolic extracts (E:E) which contain either saponins flavonoids tannins and essential oils have antimicrobial properties. Growth inhibition is influenced particulary by the carbohydrate chains of the glycosides. Monodesmosidic as well as bismodesmosidic glycosides of polygalacic acid exert fungicide effects. The water-soluble polysaccharides from Solidago species were isolated and tested for antitumor effects. In our study we have tested the antimycotic activity of ethanolic extracts (1:1) and saponins complex. E:E. were prepared from dried, aerial parts of S. virgaurea and S. gigantea collected at the flowering stage in August and early in September. Saponin complex was prepared from dried leaves S. gigantea. The atimycotic activity was tesetd by the method of diffusion and dilution on Sabouraud dextrose bouillon and sabouraud dextrose agar. Various strains of Candida species and dermatophytes were used. Antifungal activity of the E:E was established: Candida pseudotropicalis and C. albicans (MIC 25 %), C. krusei (MIC 27.5 %) from S. gigantea extracts and as well as a small activity of S: virgaurea extracts upon C. albicans (MIC 40 %), C. krusei and C. tropicalis (MIC 50 %). E:E the both herbs had fungicidal effect on Trichophyton mentagrophytes (MIC 14-30 %), T. schonleini (MIC 20-30 %), Microsporum gypseum (MIC 9.7 %) and M. canis (MIC 33 %). Saponin complex from S. gigantea do not express antifungal activity on candida and dermatophyte species.
