Neuropsychological Outcome Following Febrile Convulsions in Temporal Lobe Epilepsy Patients – A Pilot Study

Objective: Febrile convulsions present risk factor for temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE), and early childhood prolonged febrile convulsions correlate with the degree of sclerosis of mesial temporal lobe structures (Cendes et al 1993). Objective of our study was to investigate whether there is a significant cognitive impairment in patients with TLE and early childhood febrile convulsions. Methods: Eighteen subjects with TLE underwent comprehensive neuropsychological assessment. Six of them had a history of early childhood febrile convulsions, and etiology in others includes meningoencephalitis (N=2), acute head trauma (N=5), or were undetermined (N=5). All patients were investigated with long-term video/EEG monitoring, MRI with epilepsy protocol, and 18FDG- PET brain scan. Results: Subjects who had early febrile convulsions showed lower intelligence test performance, but had similar memory function capabilities to those without childhood febrile convulsions. Conclusions: Our pilot data support the idea that early prolonged febrile convulsions may be considered as a risk factor for later neuropsychological outcome.
