Irish-Croatian Literary Contacts in the Middle Ages (The Vision of Tundal in the Croatian written heritage)
The medieval visionary genre reaches its climax in the 12th century. The Vision of Tundal is a creation of that time which was very important for the development of the genre. This is one of the most representative texts referring to the experience of the sinful knight Tundal (Tondal/ Dundul). Original text of The Vision of Tundal (Latin) was entitled Visio Tnugdali. It was compiled by an Irishman, who represented himself as Marcus, and who, in his own words, translated the text from the Irish language. His work took place in a German monastery in Regensburg in the year 1149. As in the rest of Europe, eschatological visions also took a significant place in the Croatian medieval literature. There are two visions of Irish ancestry: The Vision of Tundal (Tundalova, Dundulova vizija/viđenje) and The Saint Patrick's Purgatory (Ot svetago patricija). In Croatian literature The Vision of Tundal has been preserved in three versions. The first one we find in Glagolitic miscellanea Petrisov zbornik from the year 1468 (under the title Govoren’je pravo i čisto od dobroga viteza Dundula). The second one we find in the Latin script miscellanea Vartal from the end of the 16th century (under the title Vidin'ja Tondalova). The third one we also find in the Latin script miscellanea Lulićev zbornik from around year 1600 (under the title Tundalovo viđenje). In this paper authors discuss the lexis of the three above mentioned Croatian versions of The Vision of Tundal and poetic connotations of distinguishing elements of each version of this text. In this paper comparative-statistical method is applied, by which an accurate insight into the lexical differences of the three Croatian versions of The Vision of Tundal is provided.
