SECURITY AND PROTECTION IN TRANSPORT OF LIQUEFIED NATURAL GAS BY SEA
Natural gas is one of the main energy sources in the world. According to international planning on the energy consumption it is anticipated for natural gas to become the main source of energy over the next thirty years. Due to the properties of natural gas, sea transport is the most economical. It is transported in specialized tankers in liquefied state as the liquefaction of natural gas reduces its volume by approximately 600%. There are certain stereotypes associated with LNG ships, such as the commonly used name ˝floating bomb˝. Could we blame it on disinformation or the fear of LNG is justified, opinions are different. In the last 20 years only two accidents are related to LNG ships. There were no injuries or fatalities and ships suffered only minor damages. This paper provides an overview and contribution to security and protection in the transport of liquefied natural gas by LNG ships. Characteristics of liquefied natural gas are processed in detail, comparison with other fuels are made as well as possible hazards during transport and loading/unloading in ports. Research aimed at increasing security in LNG transport enabled the trends of propulsion systems and LNG tanks to change which is confirmed by statistics.
