SURFACE MODIFICATIONS OF COTTON WITH CARBOXYMETHYL CELLULOSE IN WASHING PROCESSES
Various soils are removed from textile fabrics in washing. The process is efficient provided proper detergent formulations are applied, such that contain adequate amounts of surfactants, builders and special additives. Special additives most often encountered are enzymes and soil redeposition inhibitors. The paper investigates the impact of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), added to a detergent in order to prevent soil redeposition from a washing bath. Two types of the additive are analysed, differing by purity, chemical characteristics and morphology. The comparative approach is based on studying iodine adsorption and microstructure. The impact of the two types of CMC on the surface modification of cellulose in washing is investigated by measuring the electrokinetic potential.
