Evaluation of new vegetable species in Croatia
Several investigations about less known species, in use as vegetables like pak-choi, head chicory and yard long bean are presented. Pak-choi can be successfully grown in late summer and spring cultivation. In the winter, it can overwinter in unheated greenhouse, with a harvest in the beginning of March. Hypro F1 and Japro cultivars with a vegetation season of about 60 days, showed a high yield capacity (6 to 11 kg/m2), in relation with a season and a method of growth. Red head chicory cultivars can give satisfactory yields in spring and autumn growth (average head weight of 180 to 436 g). For spring growth the transplants must be cultivated in the greenhouse under a temperature higher than 15 oC, and be planted until mid-April. In autumn growth the high temperatures in planting time are limiting factor which demands intensive watering. The chicory produced in autumn growth has a satisfactory storage keeping quality. The yard long bean is a tropical plant of a high yielding capacity. In summer growth in the greenhouse and in the field, it can give a yield of up to 3 kg/m2 of attractive long green pods, of 40 to 60 cm length. The pods must be offered at the market as fresh goods, because under summer ambient temperatures they quickly lose colour, and in three days time they lose 15 to 20 % of the weight.
