Influence of the radiation parameters on the mechanical and optical properties of polymers cured by ionizing radiation with gamma-rays

Curing polymeres is always connected with heat-production that means that the temperature in the polymer - body itself and in the chamber of radiation is an increasing function of the Dosisrate. If the velocity of the temperature increas becomes too fast the distribution of the temperature during the process and as a consequence the mechanical and optical properties of polymerbody may become inhomogeneous. This inhomogeneity may also cause residual stresses. In addition these effects are also influenced by the geometry of the body (size effect). The influence of the Dosisrate is one part of this paper. For plates of the size 140x65x10mm made from Material D it could be shown that within the range 0,89 kGy/h - 3,5 kGy/h and up to a production dosis of 25 kGy the influence of the dosisrate and therefore also the temperature in the radiation chamber is practically neclectible. However there is big infuence of the temperature in the radiation chamber to the results of the typical calibration procedure during the fixationprocess with 3,37 kGy/h and a total fixation-dosis of 50 kGy. The procedure was carried out with and without artificial cooling. These results show the significant influence of temperature during fixationstep practically no additional change of deltaY occurse after this step. However from the fact that the resulting fringepattern were in both cases in complete agreement with the theoretical solution follows that the requirements for a homogeneous process are fulfilled.
