ADSORPTION PROPERTIES OF CATIONIZED COTTON WITH EPTAC
Textiles are characterized by its inner and outer structure and functional groups. Specific adsorption of ions or dissociation of the surface groups in aqueous solution results with their surface charge. Different treatments, mostly alkaline modifications of fibers, change surface charge and adsorption ability. Cationization, as an alternative method for improving dyestuff and surfactant adsorption, increases cotton zeta potential and change the fiber surface charge influence significantly on cotton adsorption properties. The present paper deals with systematic investigations of the interface phenomena of cationized cotton fabric with short chain quaternary ammonium compound 2, 3-epoxypropyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (EPTAC) before, during and after mercerization process. The water, ionic surfactant and dyestuff adsorption, as well as electrokinetic potential and specific amount of surface charge of modified cotton fabrics are researched. By comparing mercerized and cationized cotton, it was found that cationized cotton retains all the beneficial properties of mercerized cotton with a change of surface charge that ensures further quality improvement.
