THERMAL AND FT- IR ANALYSIS OF COTTON FABRICS TREATED WITH TWO DIFFERENT FLAME RETARDANT AGENTS

In this paper a halogenide free hydroxy- functional organophosphorus oligomer (OF2) as well as the classical hydroxy- functional organophosphorus agent (OF1) (commercial name Pyrovatex® CP New, Ciba) were utilized for the flame retardance finishing of cellulose materials. The organophosphorus flame retardant (OF ) compound is low on formaldehyde and is usually used for the treatment of flame retardance polyurethane materials. Since flame retardant ( FR ) agents do not have a functional group that can react with cotton cellulose it is necessary to use a bonding agent with the appropriate catalyst able to react with both, FR and cotton, so that the flame retarding system can become durable to multiple laundering cycles. In this paper TG technique was performed to investigate the dehydration and decomposition behavior of pure cotton and cotton samples treated with two different flame retardant agents. Also, the amount of crosslinkages formed by the crosslinking agents including dimethyloldihydroxylethyleneurea and citric acid was determined. FT-IR spectroscopy proved to be a reliable analytical technique for quantifying polycarboxylic acids ( PCA ) and their esters on cotton fabric. Finally, the most interesting samples were studied by the coupled TG-FT-IR technique in order to better understand the decomposition process of differently FR- treated cotton fabrics.
