Psoriasis vulgaris: an inflammatory skin disease or benign epidermal hyperplasia?

Aims: Recent scientific articles indicate that many tumor growth factors are involved in pathogenesis of psoriasis vulgaris. The scientific challenge is to obtain the proof that psoriasis vulgaris is not only an inflammatory disease, but also has characteristics of tumor, benign epidermal hyperplasia. Methods and Results: Some tumor factors are both present in tumors and in psoriasis vulgaris, such as epidermal growth factor (EGF), tumor growth factor (TGF) α and β, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). Histopathology demonstrates prominent epidermal hyperplasia as a sign of psoriasis vulgaris, which could explain the likelihood of disease course to predominantly affect some parts of the body. This is also a characteristic of fibropapillomas or seborrhoic keratoses, that have many similarities in histopathology with psoriasis vulgaris. Discussion and conclusion: Advanced treatment of psoriasis vulgaris includes cytostatics and immunosupressives, which clearly demonstates the connection between psoriasis vulgaris and benign epidermal hyperplasia.
