Differences in the incidence of basal and squamous cell carcinomas in Croatia

Aim: This study considers the differences in the incidence of basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) in Croatia. Methods: BCC and SCC cases recorded between January 1, 2003 to December 31, 2005 were retrospectively analyzed. The incidence rates were calculated per 100, 000 inhabitants according to the latest population census in Croatia from 2001. The age-standardized incidence rate was calculated per 100, 000 according to the World standard population. Results: During the study period, 7, 244 BCC cases (3, 519 males, 3, 725 females) and 1, 860 SCC cases (934 males, 926 females) were recorded. The crude incidence rate of BCC was 54.9/100, 000 for males and 53.9/100, 000 for females, while rate for SCC was 14.6/100, 000 for males and 13.4/100, 000 for females. Age-standardized rates based on the World standard population were 33.6/100, 000 for BCC in males and 24.5/100, 000 in females, corresponding to the rates for SCC, 8.9/100, 000 in males and 5.2/100, 000 in females. According to the site distribution, SCC is most common at the sites of very heavy sun exposure (face, neck, hands) and BCC is also becoming more common on area of very heavy and moderate exposure (trunk, upper arms, calves) in both sexes. Age-specific incidence rate of BCC and SCC increases rapidly after the age of 60 in males and females, reaching the peak at the age of >80 in both sexes. The highest age-standardized incidence rates for BCC and SCC were registered in Zadar County (Mediterranean Croatia), followed by the counties in the inland of Croatia. Conclusion: The future epidemiological studies should point at the regional variations of the incidence of these skin cancers in Croatia.
