Distribution of apo E genotype in the population of postmenopausal women

Apolipoprotein E (apo E) gene is polymorphic, with three alleles coding for three isoforms of the protein (E2, E3, E4), which interact differently with specific lipoprotein receptors and several cell receptors. Apo E plays a central role in the regulation of lipid metabolism, activation of lipolytic enzymes, immunoregulation and nerve regeneration. In this study, 73 postmenopausal women were studied for apo E genotype, lipoprotein molecular marker Lp(a), and fibrinolitic markers. The study was based on the dare on postmenopausl women who were free of cardivascular disease at their base-line visit. The analysis included measurement of body height and weight, body mass index, systolic and diastolic blood preassure and established risk factors (ERF) ; total/HDL cholesterol ratio. The apo E genotypes due to allelic variation at amino acids 112 and 158 were anaysed by restriction endonuclease HhaI isotyping. Results revealed 24 % of the study patients were apo E 2/4 genotype, revealing its prevalence to be increased as compared to control of general population. In control group, the following genotypes were observed (%): E4/4 - 2%, E3/4 - 16%, E2/4 - 2%, E3/3 - 72%, E2/3 - 8%, E2/2 - 0%. In addition, the results revealed the apo E3/3 genotype to be most frequent (45%), followed by apo E2/3 - 15%, and apo E3/4 - 14%. Our investigation suggested a need for a further studies in which other genetic and biochemical markers will also be investigated.
