Votive pledges: Remnants of Middle Ages in modern Croatia
This paper examines anatomical votive gifts and customs of votive pledge giving at the holy place in our time in Croatia. These votives are offered in connection with health problems. The custom of votive pledge giving at the holy place dates back to the Middle Ages. In our time they are very rare. In some shrines in Croatia they are the last witnesses of these unique and old folk conception of healing. I would like to present the votive objects, process of votive giving, including reasons for offering votives, and persons who take a part in this process. The main emphasis it will be given to the field research in the church of Saint Rocus in Petrakovo Brdo and shrine of saint Mary in Marija Bistrica.
