Relationship between respondents' description of domicile size, educational level and educational field: a Croatian study

Dividing cities and towns to industrially/ technologically developed and underdeveloped is ceding place to division according to education of labor force. The importance of educated and professional labor force is in their unique ability to transform available resources into competitive advantages (Lučin, 2006). Considering the fact that cities have monopolistic position in organizing social reality (Rogić, 2000) and that education has the key role in socio-cultural and economic development in conditions of global economic competition, it is of great interest to view how people of different educational level and different educational field place themselves in domiciles of various sizes. The aim of this study is to present relationship between respondents’ description of domicile size with educational level and field wherein the highest level of education is achieved in Croatia. The data are collected within European social study which is academically-driven social survey designed to chart and explain the interaction between Europe's changing institutions and the attitudes, beliefs and behavior patterns of its diverse populations. Information was gathered from 1484 Croatian respondents who provided answers to our and many other different issues. Our results show that there are differences in domicile size according to the field wherein the highest educational level is achieved as well as to the educational level. Possible explanations and further research problems/hypotheses are discussed.
