Chromosome number, karyotype structure and rDNA organization of the Croatian endemic species, Hyacinthella dalmatica (Lallem.) Trinajstić
Our results showed that all three populations of H. dalmatica (Blaca, Debelo brdo and Hvar) were karyologically indistinguishable, with the somatic chromosome number 2n=2x=20. In contrast to one of the previous reports, we did not observe either B-chromosomes or variability in the chromosome number. Our findings thus support the hypothesis that all four European species of the genus Hyacintella with 2n=2x=20, might be derivatives from the ancestral chromosome number 2n=2x=18, with hypothetical centre of origin in South Turkey.
