Characterization of patch test reaction in atopic dermatitis patients

Patch testing was carried out in 76 non-randomly selected patients with atopic dermatitis during the first 6 months of the year 1996. In 53 (69%) patients, one or more allergic patch test reactions were demonstrated. A majority o positive reaction were observed at 24 hours (43 patients). Ten patients showed positive reactions at 48 hours. Allergic reactions were more frequently found in women (75.51%) than in men (59.26%) but the difference was not significant. From a total of 53 positive tests, the most common allergen was nickel (34.2%), followed fy fragrance mix (23.7%), cobalt (18.4%), potassium (13.2%) and balsam of Peru (13.2%). Nickel and cobalt allergy were significantly more frequent in women. The association between nickel allergy and cobalt allergy was found to be significant. Although there were sex differences in sensitization to other allergens, these differences were not significant. In conclusion, contact hypersensitivity is not rare in patients with atopic dermatitis, which points to the importance of patch testing in these patients.
