POSSIBILITIES OF REDUCING DIESEL ENGINE HARMFUL EMISSIONS FOR EURO 6 STANDARD

Adequate measures to reduce harmful impact, including reduction of harmful emissions generated by Diesel engines installed in various types of transport means, have been brought with the aim of protecting the environment. Euro 5 standards have been in force for Diesel engines on heavy-duty vehicles for the EU region. The values of permitted harmful emissions have been constantly reduced in the past, and thus further reduction is planned in the future as well. The logical sequence plans the introduction of Euro 6 standards that foresee further substantial reduction in the values of permitted harmful emissions. The paper analysis the technical possibilities in achieving such low values of the permitted harmful emissions of Diesel engines. Since this refers to the values which are very difficult to achieve, the technical solutions are becoming increasingly complex and expensive. In relation to the reduction of emissions of NOx and particulates, basically the solutions are being combined which include usage of catalysts that perform selective catalytic reduction of NOx or return of exhaust gases and the application of particulate filters. The results can be improved also by adapting the engine cooling unit. Along with the reduction of harmful emissions, fuel consumption also has to be reduced in the light of general tendency in the reduction of energy consumption per unit of performed work and with the aim of reducing CO2 emissions as one of the causes of greenhouse effect. The undertaken measures for this purpose most often result in an increase of CO emissions. The paper also analysis the influencing values on the CO emission and the possibilities of its reduction.
