Sažetak
This paper analyses identification processes in selected urban contexts characterized by a substantial presence of immigrant and ethnic minority groups. It refers to the Hungarian minority living in the multicultural city of Pula, Croatia, by focusing on the construction of identity in Hungarian migrant narratives. The city of Pula is the urban center of the Istrian peninsula and its population has been multicultural and multiethnic for centuries. One of the oldest minority communities is Hungarian. The last wave of Hungarian immigration in Pula can be traced back to the period after World War II and most of the families that migrated at the time still live there. Therefore, this paper pays special attention to the socio-economic and historical context that determines discourse on multicultural interactions. In exploring how the identities of Hungarians in Pula are expressed, constructed, and negotiated in multilingual and culturally diverse settings of the city, and assessing the relative roles of language and culture, this paper pays special attention to the assumptions between the researchers and the researched. The main aim of this paper is to explore how identities are presented in and shaped by interpersonal communication by focusing on the possible differences in self-perception and diverse self-representations among members of the Hungarian minority as influenced by the differences in language and origins of researchers.
