Abnormalities of the m. sternohyoideus and m. stylohyoideus in a dog

M. sternohyoideus in dogs originates from sternum and first costal cartilage. From its first third it fuses with m. sternothyroideus which lies deeper. Then it splits and enters the basihyoideum. M. stylohyoideus originates from tympanohyoideum and enters the basihyoideum. The study was performed on a Doberman dog at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Zagreb. During the section we recorded anomalies of m. sternohyoideus and m. stylohyoideus. The established anomalies were not bilaterally symmetric. On the right neck side m. stylohyoideus proceeded dorsally from tympanohyioideum and from proximal end of the stylohyoideum. It runs obliquely across the lateral surface of the m. digastricus. On the ventral third it split into two smaller muscles bundle. A short caudal bundle entered lateral end of the basihyoideum. A longer cranial bundle entered posterior median fibrous raphe m. mylohyoideus. On the right neck side, m. sternohyoideus had no deviations. On the left neck side m. stylohyoideus arise as on the right side. It runs obliquely across lateral surface of m. digastricus and with its largest part entered lateral end of basihyoideum. From that point a smaller tendon part run posterior along median fibrous raphe m. mylohyoideus. The muscle bundle separated from dorsal part m. sternohyoideus entered caudal border of the central part of m. stylohyoideus. The rest of m. sternohyoideus showed no deviation. Evans (1959) described similar anomalies in mongrels' and beagles' hyoid muscle. He explained presented anomalies in the light of phylogeny based on different development and muscle migration and resulting in muscle patterns reminiscent of lower mammals.
