Mechanical and magnetic properties of Cu55Hf45-xTix metallic glasses
A recent study of Cu55Hf45-xTix metallic glasses with 0 ≤ x ≤ 45 [1] revealed the formation of bulk metallic glasses (BMG) for 15 ≤ x ≤ 30. In the same composition range the ratio of the glass transition temperature Tg, and the liquidus temperature Tl, showed a shallow maximum, consistent with the highest glass forming ability (GFA). Here, we present the results for some mechanical properties (Young's modulus and microhardness) and magnetic properties (magnetic susceptibility) of these alloys and compare their variation with x with those for Tg and the crystallization temperature Tx. All measured properties show monotonic variations with x with no particular features in the composition range for BMG formation. This is similar to the behaviour observed for binary CuxHf1-x and CuxZr1-x glassy alloys [2]. However, in the binary alloys, the elastic stiffness and the thermal stability (Tx) followed the same trend, whereas in the ternary alloys an increase in stiffness is accompanied by a decrease in thermal stability. Also, in these ternary alloys the increase of magnetic susceptibility with x is accompanied by increased stiffness, whereas, in binary alloys, they follow the opposite trend. The possible origins of the observed behaviour are briefly discussed.
