ROLL SHELL QUALITY FOR ALUMINIUM CONTINUOUS ROLL CASTERS–MECHANICAL FEATURES ANALYSIS

Continuous roll casting process combines casting procedures and hot rolling in one process, where the cast strip is produced directly from the melt. In this unique procedure strip casting is followed by heat transfer between the roll shell and the melt on one side and roll and strip deformation on the other hand. To make possible defects, inevitable in this process, eliminated or reduced to the minimum possible extent, roll shell quality is extremely important because of its effect on the quality of the final strip. In service, roll shells are subjected to stresses of mechanical and thermal origin. The steel used must possess both mechanical strenght and toughness and high resistance to thermal fatigue. Following this statement two different roll shell qualities were investigated with the aim to describe and to compare roll shell qualities in relation to expected mechanical properties that rolls need to possess in working conditions. Thus, affect of load on rolls deflection was investigated. It was assumed that the mechanical loads are followed by elastic deformation of vital roll casting unit. Finally, the influence of shell thickness, i.e. roll diameter decrease in relation to rolling force and mechanical roll camber, known as casting parameters, were investigated. Subsequently, the influence of these two casting parameters on final strip dimension quality were described. These parameters were a direct consequence of change in mechanical properties such as shell thermal expansion, roll diameter reduction, roll deflection due to rolling force.
