Mycoflora and Incidence of T-2 Toxin and DAS in Mixed Poultry Feed in Croatia
Mycotoxicoses occur as a result of consumption of feed contaminated with the toxic metabolites of fungi. Fusarium mycotoxins cause adverse effects in a wide range of animal species and T-2 toxin and diacetoxyscirpenol (DAS) have the most deleterious effects on poultry production. During the period from 1994 to 1998, a 1.110 samples of mixed poultry feed were tested on the presence of the fungal flora as well as the natural incidence of T-2 toxin and DAS using TLC method. The most prevalent isolated species were of Fusarium (28.4%), Penicillium ( 19.1 %) and Aspergillus ( 10.6%) genera. T-2 toxin and DAS were determinated in 13.5% and 63%, respectively. Generally, both mycotoxins were found at levels far bellow those needed to induce symptoms under laboratory conditions (0.10-0.50 mg/kg). Nevertheless, presence of the fungi and low concentrations of the mycotoxins in feed under field conditions may cause decreased feed intake and gain rate as well as increased feed ratio and risk to infectious diseases.
