In conclusion, I have to say that despite the fact that this book is mainly paleontological, it also presents, in a concise and elegant way, the whole Adriatic Sea, which includes three of the ten biogeographic sectors of the Mediterranean. Strong environmental gradients are present both along the east–west and north–south directions, affecting ecological patterns and effects of pollution, eutrophication, climate-change, intrusion of invasive species, etc. Hence, the northern Adriatic can give insight into how marine life copes with all of these processes, which perhaps, was given not enough prominence in the book, but is implicit. The flourishing of West Istrian and its diverse benthic communities has developed in an intensively fished area and in the vicinity of highly eutrophic zones. Thus, this book is important reading for anyone dealing in many fields of marine science.
