Malignant tumors in bioptic material at the University Hospital for Tumors in Zagreb in the period 1988-1992
We concluded that a relatively high proportion of primary malignant tumors (particulary melanomas, breast and thydoid carcinomas) were diagnosed and confirmed by biopsy at our hospital. We have analyzed 23, 195 surgical biopsies among which 5, 606 were malignant (1, 625 in males and 3, 981 in females). In total number 35.0% were breast carcinomas and 10.2% were melanomas. In 1988, the total number of malignant tumors of 1, 069 primary cancers (306 in males and 763 in female) represent 7.5% of all new primary cases in Croatia. The most common were melanomas (71.3% of all melanomas in Croatia), thyroid carcinomas (59.3%), soft tissue sarcomas (52.6%), breast carcinomas (29.9%) cervical carcinomas (20.4%) and cancers of oral cavity (30.5%).
