Esterification of citric acid and cellulose in the presence of zeolite

Polycarboxylic acids in combination with a homogeneous catalyst such as sodium hypophosphite monohydrate are environmentally sustainable binders that are used to impart durable press properties to cotton fabrics. In this study, one of the polycarboxylic acid crosslinking agents, citric acid (CA), is used to treat cotton fabrics in the presence of zeolite FAU as a catalyst. On the other hand many applications of zeolite- cellulose composite materials, mainly related to adsorption processes, have already been proposed . The desized, scoured, bleached and mercerised 100% cotton fabrics weighing 155 g/m2 were used in this study. A suspension containing FAU zeolite powder (1.3 wt%) in an aqueous solution of citric acid (10 wt %). Curing of padded fabrics was performed at 140 or 160 °C at predetermined curing times. The cured fabrics were first washed to remove the unreacted acid and the loose bonded zeolite. The ester carbonyl band intensity in the IR spectra was determined by ATR-FTIR spectroscopy technique. A Perkin Elmer TG analyzer was used to carry out the thermogravimetric analyses (heating from 30 °C to 800 °C at a heating rate of 10°C/min in air).
