Modernization plan for maritime ports in Croatia and their integration into the Short sea shipping (SSS)

Maritime linear services account for about 90% of the total tonnage of the world linear services. Considering that it is important to ensure the necessary level of security in ports, systems interoperability for ensuring a high level of quality of transport and port services. In this context, projects of modernization of Croatian ports have a high level of priority. Institutional adjustments and infrastructure development projects in the Croatian ports will enable the positioning of the port as a modern and competitive centre of SSS. This paper represent results of PHARE 2006 project ADRIATIC3S. Objective of the ADRIATIC3S is to enable and support effective development of SSS as an integral part of the Adriatic transport network. The action was based on the analysis of capacities of the Croatia and Italy, existing port features and possibilities for their reorganization as SSS centres. Starting from the status quo and the expected economy growth of the Croatia and neighbouring countries, ADRIATIC3S identifies the demand for: resolving administrative difficulties, coordination of organizational issues, improvement of transport infrastructure and human resources education. Following mentioned “Cooperation-Network for logistics and nautical education focusing on Inland Waterway Transport in the Danube corridor supported by innovative solutions” – NELI project was prepared and approved for financing within South-East Europe Programme and will be implemented until April 2012.
