Impact of chemical composition of topsoil on plant diversity in the Medvednica Nature Park, Croatia.
During recent extensive floristic field survey of Medvednica Nature Park, soil samples were collected and analysed for measurement of the soil acidity and concentration of heavy metals and some other chemical elements in topsoil. Complete area of the Nature Park of approximately 22000 ha were divided into 1/64 MTB grid sub-units (225 ha) as a basic spatial unit for collecting data. Correlation of measured data with plant diversity expressed as number of plant species was established and regression model developed. Developed model was incorporated into GIS for prediction of plant diversity on hypothetically non-surveyed areas, as well as for anticipation of alterations in plant diversity caused by changes in the environmental factors. This kind of information could be very useful in management of protected areas and defining priority areas for protection whose biological diversity is endangered.
