Application of Phenolic Acids in the Corrosion Protection of Al-0.8Mg Alloy in Chloride Solution
The inhibiting action of sinapinic and gentisic acid on Al-0.8Mg alloy in 0.5 mol dm-3 NaCl solution was studied using potentiodynamic polarization method, linear polarization method, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements. Investigations were performed on a rotating disc electrode in a quiescent solution and at different electrode rotation rates and electrolyte temperatures. The results indicate that the investigated phenolic acids act as cathodic corrosion inhibitors for the Al-0.8Mg alloy, and the inhibition efficiency increases with increasing inhibitor concentration but decreases with increasing electrode rotation rate and electrolyte temperature. A mechanism of physical adsorption is proposed for the inhibition behaviour and the adsorption characteristics of the inhibitors were approximated by Freundlich adsorption isotherm.
