Anatomy of sea level variability - an example from the Adriatic.
Sea-level variability is described using data collected at an east Adriatic station, Bakar, since 1930. It is pointed out that the processes influencing the variability are spread over a wide frequency range. Starting from the smallest periods and progressing towards the largest, the relevant phenomena are (1) tides, (2) storm surges and seiches, (3) planetary-scale disturbances, (4) seasonal and interannual fluctuations, (5) bidecadal signal, and (6) long-term trend related either to natural causes or anthropogenic effects. Practical utility of the sea-level data and analyses is stressed.
