The influence of nodule count and temperature on the toughness of ferritic ductile iron
The influence of nodule count and temperature on the as-cast ferritic ductile iron toughness was analyzed in this paper. The toughness of ductile iron samples in as-cast condition was examined by Charpy method at room temperature (20 °C) and low temperatures (0 °C, -20 °C, -40 °C) according to HRN EN 10045-1. It was found that the ferritic ductile iron toughness at 20 °C and 0 °C increases with the increase of the nodule count to the certain maximum, afterwards the further increase of nodule count results in decreasing of toughness. At low temperatures (-20 °C and -40 °C), the ferritic ductile iron toughness constantly increases with increase of nodule count. Nodule count is an important microstructural characteristic of ductile iron whose value is necessary to adjust depending on the conditions of application of castings. This requires strict control of nucleation potential of melt through the preconditioning and inoculation.
