"Multiculturalism and the Short Story"
To what extent can the format of an anthology of short stories in translation contribute to the creation and/or transformation of the received image of Canada abroad? What are the roles played by the editor and translator in the process of introducing prominent short story authors to a new audience? In what ways does the image of multicultural Canada clash and/or overlap with the stereotype of Canada as the Great White North, or that of a culture defined by Atwood's Survival (1978)? The author will address these issues and discuss the links between literature, identity and representation that surfaced in the process of editing and partly translating an anthology of contemporary Canadian short stories under the title Život na sjeveru (Northern exposure) published in Zagreb, Croatia in 2009 by Profil International.
