Gross Domestic Production versus Energy Consumption in Croatia (1945-2008)
Energy consumption shows a strong correlation with national income. Historically, increases in the level of economic activity have correlated strongly with increases in energy use. The relationship between economic growth and energy consumption is important for future economic development. A past relationship shows possible future trends at current stage of economic development but also depends on substitution between energy and other inputs within an existing technology, technological change, shifts in the composition of the energy inputs and shifts in the composition of economic output. However, in recent years, from 2000, there has been a decoupling of the connection between economic growth and consumption of energy in the Croatia. This decoupling shows that GDP and GDP per capita have grown rapidly while energy use has grown at relatively modest levels. Croatian energy use has increased steadily over the past six decades. Much of the growth in energy consumption has been concentrated on the use of fossil fuels like oil, natural gas and coal. Structure of energy use has dramatically changed from the 1945 to 2008. In the same period Gross Domestic Product has increased over five times. In this paper we show relationship between GDP and energy use for 64 years.
