Amphipods as indicators of environmental changes in the delta of the Neretva River, Croatia
The delta of the Neretva River, once high wetland biodiversity, has changed dramatically after channalization and regulation of the river system in the last five decades. Even in its present, degraded state, it is refuge of rare amphipod species. The samples were collected between April 1993 and April 2008 using a benthos net and Peterson grab. Six amphipod species were identified at 16 study sites covering the salinity gradient from oligohaline to polyhaline waters. The South Balkan species Echinogammarus thoni is the most widespread and dominant amphipod observed at the most study sites. The highest number of species was recorded in mesohaline waters, due to the presence of both freshwater and brackish water amphipods at the mouth of the river. Echinogammarus acarinatus was very rare species and exclusively occurred in springs. The lowest diversity was observed in freshwater lakes. Moreover, no amphipods were found in the oligohaline lake Kuti. This is the first record of two tube dwelling amphipods Corophium orientale and Leptocheirus pilosus in the delta. The euryhaline Mediterranean endemic species C. orientale occupies exclusively brackish water with the widest salinity range. Salinisation and extensive loss of wetland plant communities caused by human activity in the delta seem to have significant negative effects on amphipod communities.
