Information Technology as a Source of Productivity and Innovation in the Economic Crisis
Investment in Information Technology (IT) has often been considered in terms of the prerequisite/source of economic innovation, but also as a redundant cost, which cannot be exactly valued. The debate on business value of IT has been extended for more than two decades, with the current economic crisis emphasizing the issue. In the environment favouring cost-cutting, the strategic and innovation potential of IT need to be balanced with the obvious financial limitations. In this paper, authors review the theories related to the IT investment evaluation and compare it to the theories of IT-related innovation, in order to identify the trends relevant for the current, turbulent business environment.
