Bilateral application enhances immune response to tick-borne encephalitis vaccine and shows promise for postexposure treatment
A revised, four dose regimen of a highly purified inactivated virus particle TBE vaccine (Behringwerke) , each dose containing 3 ug of antigen, was given to a group of 20 adult vaccinees. The regimen was designed to elicit rapid and high-titred antibody responses to TBE vaccine, in contrast to a slow induction of immunity evoked by the current preexposure schedule. According to the new regimen two doses of the vaccine are given bilaterally on day 0 (into the deltoid s of both arms), followed by a single dose on day 7 and a booster on day 21. Serological tests (haemaglutination test and a neutralization assay) produced extraordinarily high antibody values in all vaccinees at days 14 and 21. In view of the expected incubation period of TBE virus, we belive that the new "2+1" regimen of purified TBE vaccine effectively protects any person bitten by a potentially infective tick. An optinal booster dose serves primarily as a safeguard against possible reinfection.
