Sex differences in the test of punished drinking and in the plasma corticosterone levels: Effect of diazepam
Sex differences in animal tests of anxiety and in the plasma corticosterone levels have already been reported. There is considerable evidence that drugs that increase anxiety also increase plasma corticosterone levels, and vice versa, numerous authors have shown that anxiolytic benzodiazepines reduce stress induced activation of the pituitary –adrenocortical system and of corticotropin releasing factor – mediated behavioural effects that are thought to be related to anxiety. The behaviour of control and diazepam (1 mg/kg i.p.) treated male and female rats in the test of punished drinking was investigated using the punishment behavioural paradigm developed by Vogel et al. (1971). Plasma corticosterone levels were determined by the fluorimetric method. The results have demonstrated that female control and diazepam treated rats were more anxiogenic and had higher plasma coricosterone levels than identically treated males. However, the levels of corticosterone in plasma did not reflect the level of anxiety.
