A computer simulation model of granuloma annulare spreading pattern
Aims: The specific aim of our study was to create a computer simulation model of the generation and interaction of granuloma annulare (GA) plaques and to evaluate its possible use in predicting the natural course and response of GA plaques to therapeutic interventions. Methods: The spreading pattern of GA plaques was followed in a patient with multiple lesions localized on his arms and shoulders. Plaques were photographed during a period of five months in intervals of three to five weeks. The model was based on the concept that skin behaves as an excitable medium. To validate this hypothesis, a computer simulation model (cellular automata-based) was developed and the results of the simulations were visually analyzed. Results: The results of the generated model visually correspond to the photodocumented course of GA in our patient. The proposed model is sufficiently accurate and can be used for the simulation and visualization of the morphology, spreading pattern and interaction of GA plaques. Conclusion: Skin in GA behaves as an excitable medium and the spreading and interaction of GA plaques can be simulated using a computer-based model. Computer simulation can be used to better understand the pathogenesis of GA and other figurate erythemas, and to investigate possible outcomes of different therapeutic modalities.
