Corporate social responsibilty measurement in the pharmaceutical industry of the Region

In the last decade the concept of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has been adopted by many business sectors in the world including the pharmaceutical industry and has come into the focus of interest of a great number of researchers. Stakeholder theory emphasizes social responsibility because enterprise's performance and business in general cannot be adequately measured only by profit itself. Shareholders and managers should be responsible to all others who are «directly or indirectly affect or are affected by a firm's activities». This concept is given considerable attention of researchers in a wide range of business sectors, but in pharmaceutical sector CSR research has been limited. In the pharmaceutical industry the measurement system is not well analysed to the point of outcome measures to the overall stakeholders. Thus the purpose of this research is to analyse pharmaceutical industry in the Region (some of ex Yugoslavia countries- today Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, Macedonia) that have developed the social responsibility concept in their famous pharmaceutical enterprises. The research objectives are to investigate the CSR measurement system and to conduct cross-analysis of pharmaceutical enterprises in using indicators to present economic, environmental and social issues. The final aim is to recommend a unified approach to a CSR measurement system in the pharmaceutical sector in the Region, as there is no agreement between relevant stakeholder and the pharmaceutical industry about socially responsible pharmaceutical enterprise. A model of the socially responsible pharmaceutical enterprise will be recommended based on detailed analysis of the measurement system in the main pharmaceutical enterprises (sample of 10 in the Region) as well as applying scientific analytical and statistical methods, interviews and desk research.
