OCD symptomatology as the first sign of cortical atrophy in patient treated for PTSD

Cortical atrophy as a pathological substrate is the basis for a series of mental and neurological disturbances. Manifestation of symptoms usually occurs earlier than the appropriate imageing methods can prove it. There is a disorder in higher cortical functions, in terms of mild cognitive failure- meaning forgetfulness. The development of the disease include deterioration function of learning and memory, thinking, orientation, comprehension, numeracy, language and judging. Emotional problems and personality changes appear. All these refers to the developed clinical picture of dementia. The case of 40-year-old patient was choosen for presentation. He was participant of the Homeland War in Croatia, which is twice hospitalized at Clinic because of pronounced symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder. During the second hospitalization, the patient describes obsessive- compulsive actions of counting, and notice signs of mild cognitive failure. The development of comorbid demention process was suspected. Psychological testing was conducted on two occasions and does not indicate an organic dysfunction. Targeted examinations demonstrated a cortical atrophy.
