Towards improving destination port status
The world cruise market is one of the most dynamic segments and the fastest-growing sector of the tourism industry. The cruise industry can provide a number of benefits to governments, businesses, tourists and local communities. Ports offer and realize a significant contribution to the economic development of a destination. In that sense, ports around the world are upgrading facilities and investing heavily in new berths and cruise terminals to cope with the new mega cruise ships and the passengers they bring. However, the market role of ports is determined by their position as a home port or a destination port. The paper analyses the case study of the Port of Korčula in the context of the cruise market and the developments that are occurring within this sector. With regard to its limiting port facilities and in order to maintain its stable competitive position, a number of alternative strategies for further growth will be proposed and discussed.
